     Lake County lowest point: 9,007 feet

Topography: With the Sawatch Mountain Range containing Colorado's two highest peaks to the west and the Mosquito Range with North America's highest mountain pass to the east, Leadville sits in a high mountain valley which envelopes the headwaters of the Arkansas River.

Population: Lake County - 6,007; Leadville 2,629 (1990 census)

Size: Leadville=1.1 square miles; Lake County=376.9 square miles

Climate: Average days of sunshine=310; average snowfall annually 127.7 inches with snow on ground from end of October until middle of May. ]

Summer: A typical summer day is sunny, in the 70's, and evening temperatures in the 40's. The humidity is very low and brief afternoon showers are typical.

Winter: 127.7 inches average snowfall. A typical winter day is sunny and bright with highs averaging in the mid-30's and lows in the single digits. Snowstorms generally occur in the evening and are sometimes heavy. Highways are well-maintained, however four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires handle best. Chains are seldom, if ever, needed.
