Artistic StatementArt, done well, becomes a universal language. In my photography, I reduce the chaos of the visual world to a simpler form of light and shadow. In each photograph, I hope to touch my viewers mind with either the thought that, yes, that is how I feel when I look at this place, or I never knew it could look like this ... A photograph done well, will want to be looked at as much today as it does tomorrow or years from now. In the process of photography, I find my solitude, while the photograph itself gives me time. My photographs do not always hang by the rhetoric; thus they must speak for themselves. |
Mary DuPont continues to photograph the cityscapes and landscapes of Colorado as she has done so for the past twenty years. She lives and works in her native town of Leadville, Colorado. For the first ten years she worked completely in black and white photography. She received an A.A. in Creative Photography in 1979 at the Colorado Mountain College, Timberline Campus in Leadville. There she studied under Glenn Rand and Lawrence McFarland.
She continued her studies in photography at Metropolitan State College in Denver under Barbara Houghton. There she received her B.A. degree in English Literature in 1982. During her stay at Metro she continued pursuing her interests in art and photo histories.
Upon her return to Leadville she became interested in color photography when she took a color class from Tom Lamb at Colorado Mountain College. It was also at this time that she married Leadville artist Art DuPont. For the past thirteen years they have been raising their two children, a son, Camille (13) and a daughter, Claire (12). Mary has also worked at the Leadville Picture Company, a photography studio in Leadville, doing its black and white darkroom work. She has also done some commercial work shooting weddings, team photos, etc.
Seven years ago, she and her husband, Art, started a T-shirt business, DuPont Graphics, in which Art produces the drawings and she does the lettering. Both work together printing the shirts in their home and studio at 510 East 11th Street in Leadville, Colorado. Mary can be reached here or by phone at 719-486-0701 or e-mail at adupont@chaffee.net. Her photographs can be seen at the Leadville Alpaca Company and Gallery at 115 East 7th Street in Leadville.
