About the
Leadville, Colorado Area
 |
IF YOU ARE LOOKING
FOR ADVENTURE
YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!!!
Leadville is "On
Top Of It All"!
At 10,152 feet above sea level Leadville
is the highest incorporated city in the U.S.
|
Leadville was founded with
the discovery of gold in the 1800's and reached a population
of nearly 40,000 by the 1880's. The town was a strong contender
with Denver as the site for the state capital. Besides gold, the
surrounding mountains hold a wealth of silver, lead, zinc and molybdenum.
Surprisingly, the area has
a moderate climate. Average summer highs are 78 degrees.
The winters are not bitter cold despite the low temperatures because
there is little humidity and plenty of sunshine. Our air is crystal
clear and unpolluted.
You can find plenty to do
for fun in the area. Over half of Lake County is public
lands with campsites, trails and the two highest peaks in the state
(Mt. Elbert & Mt. Massive). The San Isabel National forest encircles
the town. There are numerous 4-wheel drive roads within the forest
to explore. The Mineral Belt Trail is a paved trail that winds its
way 12.5 miles around Leadville through the historic mining district.
It is great for biking, jogging, in-line skating, walking or snow
shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter.
There is a reason they call
it Lake County. There are over 1,000 miles of trout streams
and some 300 lakes including: Twin Lakes about 15 miles south of
Leadville and Turquoise Lake about 5 miles west of town.
If skiing or snowboarding
